Open QuoteMy husband, Tom, made his Living Will in 1998.

In 2000, when he was 86, Tom developed Alzheimers, and he later moved into a local nursing home where they could give him the specialist care he needed.

One night, the nursing home telephoned me to say that Tom had developed a chest infection. It later became obvious that he was also suffering from a condition which called for surgery, but the doctor thought he would be unlikely to survive the surgery because of his age.

After discussion with me, the doctor respected my husband's Living Will and said it was a great help to know his wishes. As a result, Tom was able to die peacefully in familiar surroundings among people that he knew well.Close Quote Marks
